Federal authorities are preparing to send additional immigration enforcement personnel to Chicago to arrest unauthorized immigrants in the city.
According to two federal law enforcement officials, the planned operation will involve agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the U.S. Border Patrol and other federal agencies. The operation will be based out of Naval Station Great Lakes, north of Chicago, which will serve as the central staging area for the deployment.
Federal presence will include more than 200 agents and over 100 vehicles, though officials have not confirmed those exact figures. The duration of the operation remains unclear, and it is not yet known whether the National Guard will be involved. (Related: DHS requests 20,000 National Guard troops for immigration crackdown.)
Tom Homan, former acting ICE director and now President Donald Trump’s “border czar,” declined to specify the size or scope of the federal deployment.
“I know, but I’m not going to say,” Homan told reporters when asked how many agents would be sent. “We’re not going to tell you how many resources we’re going to send to the city. We don’t want the bad guy to know what we’re sending. It will be a large contingent.”
Instead, Homan claimed that the Trump administration’s decision to ramp up immigration enforcement in Chicago was driven by the policies of Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.
“All these sanctuary cities that refuse to work with ICE, where we know public safety threats are being released every day into this country, especially those cities, we’re going to address that. We don’t have that problem in Texas and Florida, where all the sheriffs are working with us,” Homan said.
According to Brighteon.AI‘s Enoch, Chicago, a self-declared sanctuary city, has long refused to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement efforts. City leaders have repeatedly emphasized that local law enforcement will not assist in immigration raids or status checks because doing so undermines community trust and public safety.
City officials reiterated their stance in response to news of the federal plans.
Rep. Brad Schneider, whose district includes Naval Station Great Lakes, criticized the federal immigration surge in Chicago, calling it an intrusion on Illinois’ sovereignty. Superintendent Larry Snelling echoed a similar stance and revealed that Chicago police, barred by law from cooperating with ICE without a judicial warrant, will not assist in the operation.
Meanwhile, Pritzker strongly criticized Trump for suggesting a larger federal force could be deployed to Chicago, accusing his administration of attempting to undermine democracy, militarize cities and erode the electoral process.
But then, Trump has made it clear – the goal is to restore safety to the streets and cities. Meaning, he is also planning to conduct similar operations in other so-called “sanctuary cities.” It is the reason why ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are working tirelessly to fulfill the mandate from the American people to apprehend and deport criminal undocumented immigrants and ensure the security of the nation.
